Hookt Messenger is an instant messaging application that keeps you connected with all your friends and contacts. It’s fast, reliable, easy to use and 100% free.
Hookt Messenger utilizes your mobile device’s data connection to send messages faster and more reliably than SMS, plus you don’t have to worry about those expensive SMS fees.
Every Hookt user gets assigned a unique seven character ID that they can share with all their friends without having to give out a phone number or email address.
Your phone number and email address are used as the primary means of connecting you to your friends on Hookt.
Yes, it is free to send messages to contacts in other countries, just like it is free to email contacts in other countries.
Short answer, yes. Hookt will save up to 20 messages in each open conversation so you can pick up right where you left off if you sign out or sign in somewhere else. However, if you stay signed in you don’t have to worry about losing anything because Hookt maintains all your history and shared content in all of your conversations.
Hookt is offered in multiple countries and country codes can get a little tricky. Double check that you’ve included a country code, area code, and your full phone number. If you haven’t already, try adding a ‘+’ before your country code as well and submitting again.
If you or your friends are seeing the “unsupported message type” alert it means that your current build does not support a certain feature. Download the newest version of Hookt from the App Store and see what you’ve been missing!
Go to the “profile” page and click on the camera-icon appearing in the top-right corner of your profile pic. Upon clicking this icon, you will have the option of taking a new picture, or selecting an existing photo from a photo album on your phone.
We do our best to connect you with other Hookt users, but at least one of you needs to have the other’s contact to be able to connect. You can manually add someone by clicking on the “+” in the top right corner of the Friends page and entering their phone number, email, or Hookt ID.
While we try to make as many connections as we can on our end you can also manually add friends via phone number, email, or Hookt ID. You can also connect with your Facebook friends and post your Hookt ID on Twitter.
Creating a group chat is easier than ever! Go into an open chat or start a new one and select the group button in the top right corner. The group chat drawer will open and provide you with the option to add more people while also showing you which of your friends are already in that chat.

There are two ways to go about deleting a conversation, you can either select the Edit button in the top left corner of the Chats page or you can swipe across the conversation you want to delete; both of these actions will trigger red deletion buttons.
Simply long hold on a profile tile within the Friends page to trigger the edit state. While in edit mode, clicking the ‘X’ icon on a profile photo will give you the option to delete that user or block/delete that user. Blocking a user will prevent them from getting auto added back to your friends list, but you can always manually add friends back through the Add Friend page.
When in a one-on-one conversation, every message you send will have a symbol on the right hand side:
- A pending wheel appears when the message is sending.
- A dark grey checkmark appears when the message has been sent.
- A blue checkmark with an ‘R’ above it appears when the message has been delivered and read.
- A red retry icon appears if the message fails to send. You can select this icon to resend the message.

There could be several possible reasons you are not getting push notifications. So let’s go through each of them one by one and see if we can resolve the problem.
The first thing that might be causing trouble is that your notifications may be turned off in the iPhone Settings. To fix this, launch the iPhone Settings and tap on the “Notifications” menu:

iOS 4 and iOS 5
Then, make sure that Hookt Notifications are turned ON for the “Badges”, “Alerts”, and “Sounds”:

After enabling push notifications for Hookt in the iPhone Settings, you need to turn OFF your iPhone for 30 seconds.

Alright, now launch Hookt so that it can register itself with Apple Push Notification Services. After completing all of these steps, you should be all set.
Hookt Messenger uses the same internet data plan that you would use for email and web. As such, if you would normally pay cellular data roaming charges when traveling abroad / overseas for web and email usage, Hookt would be no different. However, Hookt would be free to use over a Wi-Fi connection. To confirm that your data roaming is disabled, go into your iPhone Settings, and select the “General” option, then “Network”. Here there will be a “Data Roaming” option that you want to make sure it is set to “Off”.
